Chapter 20

The Replacement

Daisy

I thought I was going to be excited to return to work and dive into the distractions of my normal routine, but my boss had been right. I needed the time away, and even after a few days, I pushed open my boss’s office door, still melancholy. I kept looking over my shoulders, irrationally hoping to see Megan and Kevin sneaking around. That would never happen again. Despite the stabs of sadness every few minutes, I had to get back into the saddle and get that rig moving, or there would be more victims like Megan.

I was nervous about meeting my new partner in Borealis Medical Center’s emergency services department, but at the same time, I was happy for a fresh distraction. I closed the door behind me and found my boss smiling behind his basic desk stacked high with knickknacks, photos, and files. His comb-over needed a brushing as it stuck up and flopped over. Sitting across from him in a plain upholstered chair was a woman I’d never seen around before. I presumed Megan’s replacement.

“Daisy, this is your new partner, Kayla,” my boss said and gestured to the woman.

As I approached, Kayla stood up and offered her hand to shake. The leggy brunette smiled politely, but she seemed as nervous as me. A partner was serious business. We had to get along because mistakes were made when partners miscommunicated. She said, “Nice to meet you.”

With a friendly smile, I accepted her hand. “Likewise.”

“Kayla joins us from Antigo. I think you two will be a great fit.” My boss smiled and rubbed his hands together. “How about you two get to know each other before the first call? Daisy, show your partner around.” He gestured for us to leave.

“Come with me,” I said, all cheerful. Antigo was a smaller town, so I was curious to know the call volume and types of cases she’d responded to. Plus, she wasn’t Pierce, so we were already off to a good start. I led Kayla back down the corridor. “So tell me, what was your weirdest call?”

“Weirdest?” Kayla’s eyes scanned everything as we passed through the emergency department, and she smiled all doe-eyed like a new person excited for a change of scenery always did. “I responded to a vicious animal attack at a school.”

“Oh?” Perfectly relevant. I was glued to her every word, bubbling with excitement at the possibility of having someone else to discuss the weird world I’d just learned about. I scrutinized her as we turned a corner, and I realized I had no way to visually tell if someone was a vampire, elf, or witch. Was asking considered rude?

“An elementary school student smuggled her cat in her backpack for show and tell. As you can imagine, the cat wasn’t thrilled, and when the teacher fought to shove the cat into a box, it scratched her good. She hollered about rabies, and I think the poor kid was traumatized from it.”

Disappointed, I said, “That is weird.”

“I know. All cats like boxes.
